Winter Break!!!

Well, today was my last final! I'm home now and I'm kinda starting to miss the 'port a little bit. My best friend, Mike, left Wednesday night, Chelsea left Tuesday, and Yanicka left Thursday morning. I went home for a couple days before that so I said goodbye to everyone Monday night and my boyfriend, Mitch, and I stopped by to say goodbye on our way home from the Olive Garden. I only had 2 actual finals this whole entire week which was pretty nice. I had my first final on Monday which was for International Relations and today's final was for Protest & Public Opinion. Both were pretty easy!

My Human Heritage play for Delta was yesterday! Surprisingly, they were all pretty awesome too watch. The first one was took place in the 80's punk era. The two guys in the play performed a dance to Michael Jackson's, Thriller! That was my favorite part of the show. Our play took place in the 1960's at SUNY Brockport. The theme is basically about two guys trying to sneak past the night desk attendants to tutor some girls. The third play was like a replication of Jersey Shore. It was hilarious. This was my professor, Sandra, last day and it was pretty sad because everyone loves her because she is so sweet! However, we all got "cult" rings as a gift from her to us.

All in all, I'm so excited for winter break! I'm going shopping tomorrow to finish up my Christmas shopping. Also, I'm excited for 5 weeks of nothing but relaxing and sleeping in and having no stress at all! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone!

Christmas Decorations

Audra bought a small, real pine tree for our room and we both brought with us from home Christmas lights. We put the tree on our window and the lights around it. Hanging from the middle of the window is a large 3D snowflake that Audra made. Our room looks really nice especially at night when we turn the Christmas lights on and the room light off. You can also see them from outside because our window faces towards Brockway, so people tell us "Oh I love your lights!" Now that it's snowing outside, it makes it feel more like the holiday season than ever. I'm actually going to have to invest on some snow boots instead of using my fuggs.

Thanksgiving Break!

Well it's almost time to go home for Thanksgiving break! My roommate Nicole just left to go back to New York City and I'm going home tomorrow. All my classes are cancelled tomorrow which is awesome!

I've been very busy lately with my living learning community. Last weekend we helped out at the Ronald McDonald house making lunches for the families that stay there. Also, we got a tour of the house.

Classes are almost done for this semester. I had a research paper and 2 group presentations for Delta last week so it was stressful. A couple of weeks ago, I had to get up at 6 a.m. to register for classes and my computer wasn't working right so I ran down the hall to get my friend Jeff's computer and woke him up. Because i'm in Delta, we get to register early :). All my friends are just now starting to register when classes are already full.

Also last week, my RD Katy and some of McLean Hall volunteered at the Oxfam Hunger Banquet last week. The ideaof the banquet was to give people an idea of the different economic classes around the world and that we take what we eat for granted. As people started to walk in, they drew what class they were in out of a bag. The low income people had to sit on the floor and eat beans, the middle income people got to sit on chairs and eat beans and rice, while the hgih income people got to eat lasagna. My neighbor, Angela, and I facilitated the low income group and asked questions about how they felt about drawing what class they were in. It was so much fun!

This weekend I went back home to see my best friend Lizzie and we went to see the Orleans County Junior Miss Program. (It kind of sounds like a beauty pageant but it's not haha.)

Today, I applied to be one of the copy editors for The Stylus. I'm currently a staff writer on The Stylus and have written 8 articles for the Lifestyles section. My section editor, Krista, is so nice. :)

I spent my entire Sunday night putting the finishing touches on my resume. Hopefully I get the job!

Well, this was a long blog entry! Happy Thanksgiving!

Ice skating with the Thompson crew

I went ice skating with my friends for the first time last week. It was an interesting experience to say the least. I thankfully didn't fall, but I guess only because I stayed pretty close to the wall while I went around the rink. But the last two times I went around I actually went further out into the rink so I'm real proud of myself. I want to keep trying, but the $3 to rent skates can add up.

Tye Die with Delta College

I went to a Tye die event hosted by the Delta College Club. I didn't get my hands dirty until I uncoiled my shirt to set it out to dry on my floor. Audra's hands are REALLY colored with the Tye die. She's actually trying to get it out with nail polish remover as I write this.

Audra and I laid ours shirts out on a plastic bag on the carpet by our beds. Hopefully I don't step on my shirt in the morning.

Introduction

Hi Everyone!

This is my first blog post. I'm so excited! My first few weeks here were really hectic because I switched majors. I'm Katelyn Hess and I'm from Albion, NY! I live ony 15 minutes away and I live in McLean. It's a lot of fun. I'm Double Majoring in Poltical Science and History with an emphasis on Pre-Law. I'm also part of Delta! It like an accelerated general education program that helps you with career preparation. I'm also involved of the Leadership and Community Service LLC in which we do various serivce projects around the community. This past Saturday, we helped out at the Sisters of St. Joseph! We mulched trees and pulled weeds and afterwards they fed us pizza for lunch!
I chose Brockport because it was close to home and they gave me a great scholarship and they made an effort to try to get to know me. Also, I came for Delta! Delta is a great program to get into. They have small class sizes and I know everyone in my classes. My Delta classes are my favorite! My classes are great. I'm taking 5 this semester which is alright with me. My International Relations class is boring because the concepts are all theories. I love my Protest and Public Opinion class! It's really interesting because that coincides with what I want to do in Political Science. I eventually want to go to law school someday.
I've met alot of new friends here. My roommate Nicole is awesome! She's from Brooklyn, NY. Also, my friend Yanicka, who lives across the hall from us, is from Brooklyn as well. It was kind of a culture shock to her because before she came up here she had never seen a farm before. Also, my friend Mike is cool too. He lives down the hall from me. He is a history major as well. We Facebook creep each other alot ;) haha. My other friend Chelsea, who is Yanicka's roommate, goes home on the weekends alot but when she is here, she is probably the funniest quiet person I have ever met. My best friend, Lizzie, came here the first week but she goes to school at Niagara County Community College so I don't get to see her alot :/. She loves it at Brockport when she visited though! Last but not least, my boyfriend Mitch comes and sees me every other day which makes me pretty happy since he lives 40 minutes away. Hopefully, I can convince him to come to Brockport to play football next year! I love it here at Brockport!

Apple Picking

The Health and Fitness Living Learning Community went on an apple picking trip. The farm also had pumpkins and berries you could pick, and a corn field maze!

Late night run to TRAX

So Audra and I decided to go to TRAX last night at 11:30pm to get some snacks since we were going to stay up doing homework. I bought Pringles and some fruit strips and Audra bought Oreo cookies and these crackers in the shape of bears. I ate my Pringles with grapes which was surprisingly g00d, but Audra ate her Oreo cookies with peanut butter! She said it tasted good, but I didn't feel adventurous enough to try it.

Ishmael Beah

Ishmael Beah, the author of "A Long Way Gone: memoirs of a boy soldier" spoke here at Brockport Wednesday night. I didn't know what to expect, but he was so funny! He spoke about why he wanted to write the book, and some funny stories. For example, when he fist came to New York it was to speak at a UN meeting about child soldiers with other children who went through the same experience from all over the world. He flew over only in a t-shirt and shorts because that was all that he had, but it was winter. So when he got off the plane, he said he didn't want to go outside because he was so cold. He "knew" what winter was, but he had never really understood it because he's never experienced it because he's from Sierra Leone. But when he got to his hotel , the radiator was on high, and he was so hot! Ishmael said that he didn't know how New Yorkers did it, living in this constant change of temperature. Another story was how on the plane they served salad, and he wondered why Americans ate grass, but he ate in anyway because "When in Rome, eat as Romans." He was just a very likable person and talked to the audience like it was a conversation between friends, not like a script which was nice. Another funny moment was when he mentioned that he found Esther. Esther was a nurse at the rehabilitation center he stayed at for a time. He connected with her and said that she was the first person who looked at him with no fear in her eyes and no judgment and it was insinuated that he had some romantic feelings for her in the book. When he was doing another speech at a school, I think in Canada, he said someone came up to him afterward and gave him Esther's phone number. He told us that he called her, but was disappointed to learn she was married with children. We all laughed, and it was almost like an inside joke for those who had read the book.

I got my book signed and got to take a picture with him. In the picture is Ishmael Beah, me, Audra and our friend Teresa.

Halloween decorations

Audra and I put up some Halloween decorations in the room that her mom sent her. I especially like the tree with the owl on it.

Just some random nights during the week!

The first couple are of me and my suite mate Lauren making some Velveeta mac and cheese one night for dinner! The next one is of my friend Jamie getting his haircut for the first time at Brockport by our friends in his dorm! And the last two are a late night getting milkshakes at Trax! :)

Late night adventures with my roomie

So when Passion Pit came to play at Brockport, there were people handing out Eco cards that had seeds planted inside of them. Audra had a plastic container that she didn't need so we went out to Cooper late at night and took some soil and planted our cards. Hopefully the seeds are for flowers and not plain grass. We used sunglasses that I got from Glow Fest as our own personal shovel.
